University Honors

Admissions to Honors

Admission for high school seniors

Anyone one who applies to Virginia Tech is welcome to apply to University Honors—a formal invitation to apply to University Honors is not required.

If you are interested in University Honors, you will apply online. Once the Office of Undergraduate Admissions receives and processes your application, and you have set up your Guest Account (within 24-72 hours after an undergraduate admissions application has been submitted), you will gain access to your Application Status Page. To apply to University Honors, you will access a link to the application on your Application Status Page. For more information about setting up your Guest Account to gain access to your Application Status Page, please visit

The University Honors regular deadline is January 23rd, so be sure to apply to Virginia Tech in enough time to create your Guest Account, gain access to the University Honors application, and complete the UH application before the 23rd. If you wish to be considered for UH recruitment scholarships, the scholarship priority deadline is December 8. Completed applications received by December 8 will be reviewed and considered for scholarships first.

Anyone applying to the university may apply to University Honors. There are no minimum scores that a student must meet in order to apply. For freshmen who entered University Honors in Fall 2014, the average GPA was 4.24 (with a range of 3.51-5.00), the average (Math+Verbal) SAT was 1353 (with a range of 1020-1600), and the average ACT composite score was between a 30 and a 31 (with a range of 19 - 36). Our application looks holistically at an applicant's experiences and considers the quality of engagement over sheer quantity, self-awareness and reflection on involvement, and authenticity.

Students who do not enter Virginia Tech in Honors will have an opportunity to apply to University Honors after they have established themselves at the university and met the internal GPA requirement.

We strongly encourage all students to consider applying for a living learning community (LLC). Honors hosts two communities, the Hillcrest Community and the Honors Residential College. Many Honors students also participate in other LLCs across campus. Visit for information on housing options.
