Mrs. Christina McIntyre
Mrs. Christina McIntyre is a self-proclaimed “clam digger”, a native of the Jersey Shore (Exit 7A). She attended Virginia Tech as an undergraduate back in the ‘80s where she studied Human Nutrition and Foods. After a couple of years working in the exercise and wellness field on the island of Kauai, Hawaii and landscaping in Santa Cruz, California she returned to Virginia to complete her Master’s degree in Human Nutrition, Foods & Exercise at Virginia Tech, studying the metabolism of stearic acid (C18:0).
Since 1995 she has worked as a Research Associate, Instructor, Undergraduate Coordinator and Assistant Department Head for Human Nutrition, Foods & Exercise in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences. Her greatest pleasure comes from helping students succeed and reach beyond what they thought was possible. She joined the University Honors staff as Associate Director in July 2007.
Christina is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National ACademic ADvising Association (NACADA), the National Association of Fellowship Advisor (NAFA) and the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC). Along with colleague, Deborah Good, Ph.D., Christina coordinates a summer undergraduate research program sponsored by the USDA. In her opinion the value of undergraduate research is an essential component to a high quality university education. She strives to instill in students the awareness of learning beyond the traditional classroom through interactions with a wide variety of university faculty, staff and peers. Virginia Tech provides a great environment and many opportunities.
When it comes to nutrition and exercise, Christina likes to practice what she preaches. She has been a competitive athlete in marathons, swimming and cycling events including a two time showing in the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon (’86, ’88), and Race Across America (’93). Currently she exercises “for the fun of it, and to stay healthy” and often incorporates cycling excursion with holidays. These outings are often accompanied by her husband, Jim, who is also a recreational cyclist and an alumnus of Virginia Tech (Computer Science). They currently share their home with two West Highland White Terriers, Tralee and Fiona. Christina’s interests include travel, playing (a/k/a exercise), quality time spent with others, and being in the great outdoors.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” – Chinese proverb
Ut doceat, ut moveat, ut delectet - To teach, to stir the mind, to provide enjoyment.
Congratulations to Christina for winning the 2012 Provost's Award for Excellence in Advising.
